HS code
Also known as: Harmonized System code, HS6
Harmonized System code — a 6-digit international classification for traded goods, governed by the World Customs Organization. The first 2 digits = chapter, 4 digits = heading, 6 digits = subheading.
The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System ("HS") was adopted in 1988 and is used by 200+ countries. The 6-digit version is internationally standardized; countries extend it with additional digits (8 or 10) for national tariff purposes. CEPII BACI publishes data at the HS6 level, which is the most granular cross-country comparable level. Updates are issued every five years (HS92, HS96, HS02, HS07, HS12, HS17, HS22).
Examples
- 870323 = passenger cars with engine 1500–3000cc.
