Trade glossary · classification
HS6 subheading
The full 6-digit Harmonized System code identifying a specific product line (e.g. 870323 = passenger cars 1500–3000cc).
HS6 is the lowest level at which classifications are internationally harmonized — countries agree on what each 6-digit code means. National tariff schedules add 2 or 4 more digits for finer detail (HS8 or HS10), but those national extensions are not directly comparable across countries. CEPII BACI carries the HS6 level, giving ~5,300 product lines worldwide.
Examples
- HS 851712 = mobile phones; the largest single HS6 line for many Asian exporters.
- HS 270900 = crude oil; the largest single HS6 line in global trade.
- HS 870380 = electric vehicles; a fast-growing HS6 since 2017.
